What Are Foam Rollers?
What Are Foam Rollers?
You've seen them on tv. You've seen them at the gym. You've seen them on your favorite fitness blogger's Instagram. So what exactly do those cylindrical foam fitness tools do, and why does it seem like everyone's using them? Today on the blog, we cover all things foam roller, and if they're the right fit for your fitness arsenal.
The basic premise of foam rollers are simple: they are used as a way to provide your muscles with a deep tissue massage. Why would you want to provide your muscles with a deep tissue massage? Basically, these types of massages help to keep your muscles functioning at their highest level, because they allow the muscles to heal more quickly, which in turn allows you to recover faster. This keeps your muscles at their healthiest.
If you've never used a foam roller before, be forewarned--they hurt. It's a satisfying type of pain, though, and it should be uncomfortable though never unbearable, similar to stretching. It is possible that you will be sore the next day after rolling, though this is normal.
To properly foam roll your muscles, consult with a physician or physical trainer for proper technique. However, it should consist of moderate pressure applied with one's own bodyweight, in a movement consisting of slow, rolling movements. When an area of pain is found, be sure to pause for several seconds, attempting to relax the area of discomfort, and allowing the roller to apply pressure to the pain point.
Foam rollers are great for people of all fitness levels to provide their muscles with support necessary for healthy muscle function. Cheap foam rollers can be found in any fitness store, or online retailers like Amazon. As always, be sure to check with your trainer before attempting any new fitness routines, in order to prevent injury.
