Write Your Workout Down Beforehand
Having a plan before you go can help take the mystery out of the gym. Knowing that you want to focus on cardio and your legs today, and then writing down that you want to do 20 minutes on the treadmill, followed by squats, lunges, burpees, etc afterwards can help you to feel more confident while you're there. Plus, it will prevent you from getting distracted and having the dreaded "what's next?" feeling while you're working out!
Hire A Trainer
Trainers are there for a reason, and that reason is to help you! They're totally qualified and used to answering questions... and they're so good at it that they made it their career. They will expose you to equipment that you might never have tried before, and help make sure your form is appropriate. Even hiring a trainer for only a few sessions can make a huge difference in your workout.
Exercise During Off Hours
The worst thing that can happen to someone who is nervous about working out? Walking into the gym and seeing it completely filled with people. YIKES! Avoid this by going at times when people are less likely to be at the gym. Aka, avoid the after-work rush, which is filled with people who are trying to squeeze in a workout right after their job ends. Instead, try morning or afternoon workouts, when the gym activity is seeing a lull.
Work Out With A Friend
Having a support system to work out with is helpful in more ways than just one! Not only will you feel less nervous when you're with a friend, but you guys can help each other feel out the gym. You can try new workouts or equipment, and help each other if either of you struggle with a particular aspect of fitness.
Select A Gym That Is Right For Your Needs
Not every gym is filled with guys with huge muscles lifting hundreds of pounds, or women with more abs than you can count on one hand. Some gyms cater to people who are beginners at working out, and are way less intimidating to those who are just starting out. Gyms like Curves, Planet Fitness, etc, are all good options to look into if you want to banish those nerves!
